What is this Agile thing?
First off, Agility has nothing to do with moving quickly!
If you google “What is Agile” you’ll find a lot of links talking about “iterative development”, “time boxes” and “a project management approach” but the truth is that none of these things give you Agility. These are things that come from whatever ‘framework for doing’ we apply on top of our Agile behaviours (e.g. Scrum). Being Agile is about how we go choose to go about doing what we’re doing and what is important to us.
In the summer of 2019 I was bored in my role and was applying for external roles. In one of the interviews I had for an Agile Coach role I was asked what ‘Agile’ was. My response was that it wasn’t really a ‘thing’ or a framework – instead it’s a set of behaviours and a culture… a way of working.
These behaviours are described and laid out in the Agile Manifesto and the 12 Agile Principles.
